  • Propylene glycol

It is a non-toxic element which is used to give the e-liquid a better taste and flavor. It is used as an essential ingredient of food coloring, as well as an additive in different medicines. Propylene Glycol is either used on its own in vape liquids or with Vegetable Glycerine to get a smooth vape.

  • Vegetable glycerin

The use of Vegetable Glycerine in vape is common and safe for consumption. It is used to increase the density of the vape liquid, due to its thick consistency. Furthermore, it is used with Propylene Glycol for a better vaping experience.
While both the PG and VG are used in the vape are completely harmless, you are advised to profess caution the first time you use a vape liquid containing VG in case an allergic reaction occurs. • Diketones

The use of Diketones is what makes the product buttery and creamy in flavor as well as the e-liquids. The testing of Diketones is mandatory but it isn’t the case as far as the law goes in case of inhaling products. This is the reason why it is difficult to find the right information about the e-liquids that are diketone-free. It is basically a set of chemicals that make this chemical like diacetyl, acetyl propionyl, and acetoin.
These chemicals have different properties from each other but both acetyl propionyl and acetoin contain traces of diacetyl.

  • Diacetyl

Diacetyl is a very harmful substance that is not fit for consumption. This substance was used as an additive to create a flavor of butter in the microwave popcorn. It was discovered in the 1990s after a few workers in the popcorn factory contracted the bronchiolitis after inhaling high amounts of it for a long time. The name “Popcorn lung” for bronchiolitis showcases the toxicity of Diacetyl. Because its levels are tested for food as opposed to for Vape inhalation, it isn’t safe for inhaling.

According to a study conducted at Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health, it was reported that the damaging effect of Diacetyl in cigarettes is 750 times more when a person inhales a conventional Tobacco cigarette and that is why E-Juice or Vape is considered better than smoking. The detrimental effect of Diacetyl attributed to Vape Manufacturer to produce diacetyl-free Vape juice.

The use of two other diketones, namely: Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin is of concern as well, but these are not as harmful Diacetyl itself. These chemicals are commonly found in Vape Liquids and have detrimental effects on humans. The use of these chemicals was started as a safer alternative to the diacetyl was sought after the entire fiasco of the popcorn factory. Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin also increases the rate of the chemical reaction of diacetyl. This catalytic effect of acetyl propionyl and acetoin is something that can take place during the process of manufacturing, as well as when a person is vaping.

Presently, there is a lack of concrete and scientific data regarding nature both of these substances. Regardless, there are people who think that it should not be used as an ingredient in the vape products and should be avoided.
